Gorham's Cave Complex
Four sea caves on the eastern face, inscribed by UNESCO in 2016 as evidence of Neanderthal occupation over 100,000 years, including engravings cut into the bedrock.
The caves themselves are reached by permit or seen from the water; what visitors do is the viewing platform and interpretation centre on Europa Advance Road, which looks straight down onto the complex.
The hashtag engraving found here in 2012 is one of the strongest pieces of evidence we have that Neanderthals made abstract marks. It is a genuinely significant place, and almost nobody on a coach tour ever hears about it.
Our tip
Best combined with a dolphin safari — from the water you see the cave mouths as the Neanderthals' neighbours did.
