100 Ton Gun
A 17.72-inch rifled muzzle-loader at Napier of Magdala Battery, mounted in 1884 to answer the Italian battleships then being built for the Spanish navy.
The gun fired a one-ton shell four kilometres and needed thirty-five men to serve it. Its hydraulic loading gear, magazine and shell store are all still in place beneath the mounting, which is what makes this more interesting than a big barrel on a plinth.
Four were made for Gibraltar and Malta. Two survive, and this is the one you can stand next to.
Our tip
It sits down at sea level near Rosia Bay, so it pairs naturally with Europa Point rather than the Upper Rock stops.
