Main Street
A pedestrianised mile of Georgian shopfronts, Gibraltar's cathedral and Parliament, ending in the liveliest square on the Rock.
Perfume, spirits, tobacco and electronics are duty-free, which is why the cruise crowds head straight here. What is worth slowing down for is everything between the shops: the Anglican cathedral built in Moorish style, the Convent, the Garrison Library and the changing shopfront names — Genoese, Maltese, Sephardi, Moroccan, British.
Casemates Square at the northern end was a barracks and an execution ground. It is now where Gibraltar eats dinner outdoors.
Our tip
Cruise passengers: shop at the end, not the start. Bags in the vehicle beat bags up the Rock.
