Military history
O'Hara's Battery
A coastal battery built on the summit ridge, holding a 9.2-inch breech-loading gun that could throw a shell 27 kilometres out into the Strait.
This is the top of Gibraltar. The gun was test-fired rarely and in anger never, and it still turns on its mounting above a magazine and shell hoist you can walk through.
Because it is the summit, the view is the only one on the Rock that gives you both coastlines and the full length of the eastern cliffs at once. On a clear day the Atlas Mountains are visible behind Morocco.
Our tip
Opening is seasonal and the road up is narrow. Worth asking about when you book rather than hoping on the day.
