St. Michael's Cave
The best known of Gibraltar's 150-odd caves: a vast limestone chamber that the Victorians thought was bottomless and the wartime garrison fitted out as an emergency hospital.
The main chamber drops away in front of you as you enter, floodlit and scored with colour, with an auditorium built into the floor. Concerts are still held in it — the acoustics are the reason the space survived being turned into a hospital in 1942 without much alteration.
Beyond the show cave is the Lower Cave system, a genuine caving experience by appointment only. The main chamber is the one on every tour, and it is the coolest twenty minutes of a July afternoon anywhere on the Rock.
Our tip
It is a steady 18°C inside and the steps sweat. Trainers, not sandals.
