Inside the Rock

World War II Tunnels

Between 1939 and 1945 Canadian and British engineers drove 55km of tunnels into the Rock, enough to garrison 16,000 men with their own power station, hospital, bakery and water supply.

Gibraltar's total tunnel length exceeds the length of its roads. Most of the wartime network is still military property; the section open to visitors runs from Hay's Level and includes the chambers where Operation Torch — the Allied invasion of North Africa — was planned from Eisenhower's headquarters under the Rock.

It is the stop that changes how people see the place. Above ground Gibraltar is a town with a big hill behind it; down here it is a fortress with a town attached.
